Carmen Townsend – Cary Brothers

11 Mar

Today is a day for couples and lying in bed all day listening to good music. So, I give you two from the SxSW list that I wish WERE a couple. Carmen Townsend and Cary Brothers are both shining examples of how a voice can be used as a dynamic instrument in itself. It sometimes needs nothing more than the faint whisper of instruments to set a gentle backdrop for the set of pipes that these two both possess. Neither are instantly mind-blowing like say that of Adele, but they have qualities that make me wish I could sing. That to me is the true test to whether I really enjoy someones voice, if it compels me to dream of visions of voice lessons, they are good. (For example, I rarely screech along to Neutral Milk Hotel and think I should take up the art form… even though they are my heroes.)

Listen to Carmen Townsend manipulate the shit out of her pipes and tell me you don’t wish you sounded less like someone with a puberty issue and more like this…

Cary Brothers has been a quiet little hum on the indie radar since his gigantor hit, “Blue Eyes” from Garden State. The indie world owes a lot to Zach Braff, and as much as that infuriates me, if it means that The Shins got to make some dollars (before Murphy smashed them all to bits (sadsies) and that Cary Brothers got to sing me to sleep through ear buds more than a few times… I will take it.

His voice makes panties come off. For serious. I like his take on the Thompson Twins, “If You Were Here”… makes me wish that Jake Ryan would show up in a red porsche… only this time he’d probably be wearing boat shoes, we are listening to indie rock after all.

(and yes, the video is THIS bad)

HAPPY FRIIIIIDAY!!! I shall celebrate by buying stuff I don’t need and then lying as still as possible in my bed all night. Winning (thank you sheenster)
